WAEL SHAWKY / THE CABARET CRUSADES

Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen
Düsseldorf, Germany

It took over four months, many hands and much creativity to produce 300 marionettes in glass, over 100 of which are fully articulated with moving eyes, mouths, arms and legs.

The marionettes are the characters in the video, The Secrets of Karbalaa, the third chapter of a trilogy of works by Wael Shawky.

After making films with ceramic and wood marionettes, the Egyptian artist choose glass to give a new interpretation to his trilogy which shows the Crusades from the Arab perspective.

The Secrets of Karbalaa opened at the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen in December 2014 and while the entire trilogy of films was shown with an exhibit of the glass marionettes at PS 1 MOMA of New York in early 2015.
